The 712 Initiative received three Best Development Awards from 1000 Friends of Iowa Tuesday at the State Capitol in Des Moines.

Each year, 1000 Friends of Iowa receives nominations for smart growth/shrink and development, which are then judged against strict criteria in their respective category by a group of jurors.

The awards showcase projects that employ the principals of smart growth, utilize the most resilient, efficient, and thoughtful development practices in different categories including:

  • Mixed Use
  • New Civic
  • Renewable Energy
  • Placemaking/Greenspace
  • Renovated Civic
  • Renovated Commercial
  • Renovated Residential
  • Transportation/Complete Streets

The Best Development Awards not only recognize communities and businesses throughout the state doing impeccable work, but they also cause a ripple effect – educating and mobilizing individuals to dream big about responsible land use and serve as a shining example of what’s possible through smart, practical land use policy in Iowa.

Awards received were: Mixed Use for the restoration of the Cohen Building, Renovated Residential for The 712 Initiative Housing Revitalization Program and, the Innovative Leadership Award.
