On Wednesday October 7 the City Historic Preservation Commission is holding a public hearing which will include the agenda item of designating the 500 Block of West Broadway (the old Iowa Clothes building) as a Local Historical Landmark.
The 712 Initiative has support from our local historical society to make this building a landmark, but it would also help our cause to have community support.
It’s not just about bricks and mortar. Historic buildings are more than examples of architecture or aesthetics; they represent the intentions, assumptions and lives of those who built them and used them, and serve as crucial touchpoints linking our legacy with the present. What makes this building complex particularly significant is that it stands as one of the few remaining examples of a specific and important time period in Council Bluffs.
